Spain's Javier Bardem not only created one of the most memorable villains in movie history, most people seem to forget he also did it in a foreign language. Bardem, a previous nominee for Before Night Falls (and also notorious contender for The Sea Inside) has swept the precursors and while Casey Affleck (so captivating as Robert Ford in The Assassination of Jesse James...), Tom Wilkinson (powerful in Michael Clayton) or Holbrook (heartbreaking in Into the Wild) would make worthy recipients as well, none of them was even close to Bardem's level of critical acclaim and support this awards season.
