"SUNSHINE" (R)
Directed by Danny Boyle
Starring Cillian Murphy,
Chris Evans, Rose Byrne & Michelle Yeoh

Cillian Murphy stars in
Danny Boyle's overall satisfying thriller "Sunshine"
By Johnny Alba
Although it’s never shown until its last
scene, Earth has entered into an Ice Age as a consequence of the Sun’s
imminent extinction on year 2057. To avoid the end of the human
civilization, spaceship Icarus II (sent almost a decade after the
original Icarus failed to complete the task) is making a final attempt
to reignite the star by dropping a thermonuclear bomb (of the size of
the always movie-friendly Manhattan) on its surface. A team of eights
experts, played by solid international talent, have prepared for months
for this experience and they are well aware of its risks.
Cillian Murphy toplines as Robert Capa, the scientist in charge of the
bomb’s maintenance and therefore, the only one who would not be
dispensable in case of emergency. The rest of the crew is obviously not
so important plot wise; with the exception of Rose Byrne (playing Capa’s
love interest Cassie), Chris Evans (Capa’s short-tempered counterpart)
and Michelle Yeoh (as Corazon, the botanist responsible of the
production of oxygen within the ship).
The film develops interesting theories about the future and its
technology; and Brit director Danny Boyle skillfully explores the nature
of his characters and the things they left behind on Earth. During the
first half, “Sunshine” is philosophical and inspiring; far more mature
than Boyle’s latest projects (it's during the last half were troubles
begin).
When a misguided decision risks their
mission and their survival, some crew members are more willing to accept
their faith than others. After that, pic takes an unnecessary turn where
the initial soulfulness is quickly replaced by the average angst of
teenagers about to get butchered by a masked psycho.
Overall, “Sunshine” will probably do well with the hardcore fans of the
science-fiction genre and Boyle’s loyal fan base but despite a shiny
cast, “Sunshine” seems destined to fade into cult classic darkness.
